It’s March 1st 2019, the day “I met Ellen” in person. She was few hundred meters away on the stage of Bell Centre in Montreal, I was on one of the seats furthest away, but her messages were close to me! Ellen had a conference in the city, it was an interview in which she shared her personal story – her childhood circumstances, career development, ideals in life and more.

As a student in Religious Studies, I pay closer attention to the representations of God in the media, wether it will be a direct mentioning of the word or symbols related to religion and / or spirituality. This is why I am writing this story. If I need to review tonight’s event in one sentence, it will be this:

Ellen turned to God and he responded!

I will explain. Let me mention first that I am not a religious person. I simply study religion. I consider myself spiritual, but the distinction is the theme of another post. So, Ellen was telling the story about how she began her career. Shortly, after the tragic loss of her girlfriend, she was sitting in her rented appartment, without much money but with a lot of faith! She said there were fleas in the appartment, and as she believes that everything happens for a reason, she started thinking what would be the purpose of those fleas? Armed with a pen and a paper, and her unique sense of humour, she started imagining a conversation with God. you can hear the original story told by her in her latest stand up comedy “Relatable“. The material she wrote became the comedy piece that got her invited to Johnny Carson’s show. She was the first and last woman invited in his show! Here is a link to her first TV appearance. In a way, she turned her thoughts towards God and that prompted her to write the joke that boosted her career. It was not a conventional prayer, but it is sort of, doesn’t it – when you direct your thoughts or words to God this is a kind of a prayer. It’s just fascinating! And the fact that she decided to come out and admit that she is gay, basing that brave decision on her dream. I believe that dreams among other functions have the possibility to be a time / place to receive spiritual messages. As Ellen said, we are all connected, everything has a purpose. There is a spiritual meaning in every action. Is there a spiritual link in every story? I will continue my research and I will be sharing more interesting conclusions on my website!

Stay true to yourself,
